Something special has happened out at The Tribute Community.
Giving back is something the "Tributans" are becoming known around town for!!

Helping Women and Children
In November homeowner Andi Lee connected with a local Woman's Shelters "Hope's Door and Baby Bundle". She sent out an email and rallied the homeowners to give back. Over all we filled two truck loads full of diapers, clothes and emergency supplies for woman and children in need!!

Holiday Toys for Tots
In December Highland Homes and The Tribute Community partnered with "Toys for Tots".
For the holidays the homeowners FILLED a dining room with hundreds of toys (including a bicycle and an electric guitar!). We also added a food drive to the event and our ladies bunco did a food drive, as well. We filled two trucks with food for local food banks AND had fun doing it!!

Birthday's in a box

And this weekend homeowner Elisa McAtee organized a "Help Mob" to do a little something special for the local food bank. She decided it would be a great idea to make "Birthday's in a box" for Children who might not otherwise have a special celebration. Homeowners brought 65 disposable cake pans with cake mix, icing, balloons and festive decorations. What a sweet gift for families in need!!

We met at the Aberdeen Park area, ate cupcakes, hung out with the neighbors and celebrated the generosity of the Tribute neighbors!!

I love that neighbors are connecting with neighbors in meaningful ways. To connect AND to give back. Giving is like a good virus and it seems that The Tribute Community has become infected!
I wonder what they will come up with next!

Giving really is better than receiving By Allen R. McConnell, Ph.D.

During the holiday season, one custom that is shared across many religious and cultural traditions ranging from Christmas to Hanukkah to Kwanzaa is the act of giving to others.

For instance, we often hear the phrase that "it is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35) quoted a lot during this time of year. Although holiday gift giving has often become associated with shopping aggravations and as a key indicator of the economy's general state of health, there is considerable evidence in support of this frequently-cited biblical passage.

Science supports the benefits of giving

For example, research by social psychologist Liz Dunn and her colleagues appearing in the journal Science shows that people's sense of happiness is greater when they spend relatively more on others than on themselves. In one survey of over 600 U.S. citizens, Dunn and colleagues found that spending money on others predicted greater happiness whereas spending money on oneself did not, and this pattern was found across all income levels. In other words, even those with little money reported greater happiness when their proportion of spending on others, relative to the self, was greater.

In a more controlled experiment, Dunn and colleagues gave students at the University of British Columbia an envelope containing money and told them that they either (1) had to spend the money on themselves before 5 p.m. that day or (2) had to spend the money on someone else before 5 p.m. Those who gifted for others were happier than those who gifted for themselves.

In some cases, there were 5 dollars in the envelope and in other cases there were 20 dollars. The amount didn't matter -- the results were the same. Spending on others made people happier than spending on oneself. Ironically, when asked to predict which outcome would make one happier (i.e., spending on oneself or spending on others), another group of students at the same university thought spending on themselves would make them happier than spending on others. In short, people's selfish assumptions were proven wrong when they actually had the opportunity to give to others than to oneself.

Transcendental leaders support the benefits of giving

In addition to solid scientific evidence supporting the benefits of giving to others, it's not surprising to see that many of the most prominent transcendental leaders emphasize the importance giving in their teachings.

For example, emphasizing the Buddhist principle of dependent origination, the Dalai Lama notes that one's own happiness is dependent on the happiness of others. In his book Ethics for the New Millennium, the Dalai Lama observes that happiness does not come from material things but rather from a deep, genuine concern for others' happiness. In fact, the Dalai Lama contends that focusing on one's own needs instead of others' results in negative emotions that prevent true and lasting happiness for the self.

Similarly, one of my favorite quotes from Mahatma Gandhi regarding self understanding is "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

And lastly, and to bring things full circle with Christian gospel this holiday season, the value of giving to others was one of the themes reiterated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In arguably his finest sermon, The Drum Major Instinct, King notes that personal greatness and service to others is intertwined. In a world filled with people's selfish endeavors and nations' destructive engagement in war and violence, King emphasized that a desire to be the best (i.e., be the drum major) can be transformed from a selfish impulse to an instrument for justice if people adopt service to others as their goal. In King's poignant words, "Everybody can be great, because everyone can serve."

It is fitting that when King delivered this sermon to his congregation at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church exactly two months before he was assassinated, he emphasized that he hoped he would simply be remembered as a man who tried to help others, serve others, and give to others. For someone who was an accomplished international leader, it is poignant that in the end, King recognized the most powerful and enduring statement about one's life is not personal accolades such as winning Nobel Prizes but rather living a life of service to others.

Coda

During this holiday season, let's not lose sight of the value of giving to others. It does not matter whether you give lots or little, give gifts or intangible things. What matters most for meaningful happiness is appreciating the importance of those around you, family, friends, and community, and to do so each and every day of the year and not just simply on Christmas morning.

It is no secret that the magic of life is often made to sparkle with the nature of the Earth. Often the world is brought to its smallest level by the fellowship of all the creatures that inhabit it. It is on this magnificent example of life, nature, and the community of it all, that our story begins.

For it all began in the isles of Scotland, a land of promise, beauty, friendship, and peace. It is the embodiment of the culture there that envelops this land with the fortune of everyone together making the land more than just a place to call home.

Just as nature creates a special bridge to people and Earth, the Scottish create a beautiful bridge of community with one another. That’s where the magic is - it's so much a part of the land, that the real acknowledgement of beauty has only been truly seen from the skies above.

And so every day, there flew a graceful creature over this land. A quick observation and one may only see the beauty of a large hawk. However in further reflection, a tribute to all that Scotland is will be noticed by the people who live below.

You see, this is no ordinary bird - he is the faithful observer and friend to all that live beneath his glorious wings. And respecting his love for the people, he nested and lived in one of the most prominent bridges in Scotland. This was not only homage to the "bridge" of community of neighbor to neighbor, but also homage to nature and its community.

Then one day it happened.....something that would give the hawk an even greater purpose, and a name that would forever live in the hearts of a new community. For just as Scotland had its primal place in Europe, a new land across the ocean was making its own community.

On that eventful day, while the hawk was nesting in his bridge in Scotland, a team of men were summoned to remove that legendary Scottish bridge and load it on to a ship destined for a new land. The confused hawk was not sure what to do, for while he nested on the bridge, his real home was in Scotland, flying high above the community he so dearly loved.

Then, just as fast as the confusion came, the hawk overheard one of the bridge workers talking about the new journey. "Wow, this old bridge is going to go very well in that new community in Texas. It will be a nice Scottish tribute of friendship for all those new neighbors."

That is all the hawk needed to hear. He now knew the mission that was given and a new destiny now awaited. The hawk kept hidden in his nest within the bridge as it made the long trek across many ocean miles and into the new community in Texas.

The Tribute to Scotland was being formed and our friend the hawk was going to be a huge part of it. If one could take a raft beneath the bridge of the Tribute, you may surely see a large hawks nest prominently laying in one of the rafters.

And on any given day, you will also see the hawk flying high above you as you hike the trails or even while you swim in one of the pools. The hawk is there watching over you, your neighbors, and your children.

It is also known that this hawk will be your good luck charm as you play golf, gracefully flying overhead watching you play, with pride in your passion for the beautiful Tribute community. You may also see him sitting on the top of the Bell Tower as you make your way back home from a long day at work. He's there, welcoming you home and proudly calling you a friend and neighbor.

Yes, The Tribute community loves this hawk, as it is the spirit of its Scottish heritage. It is always there, watching us with pride, adoration, and love for all who live beneath its wings. He represents all of us that live in The Tribute, because we also represent promise, beauty, friendship, and peace. It's this spirit that dwells in all of us who live here. And what a fitting name our friend, the hawk now has:
Prestwick ~ the "Spirit" of the Tribute.

The Big D Boat Club at Hidden Cove Marina

Just across the peninsula from The Tribute, we have a new special way to get out on our beautiful Lake Lewisville. The Big D Boat Club is a new addition to the lake and we are working hard to forge a special partnership to benefit our homeowners and this awesome new club!!

It's an amazing thing to have a beautiful lake to look at, but it's even greater to be able get out and play in the water!

I had the opportunity last week to visit the boat club and enjoy a pontoon boat for a sunset tour around the lake! Me and several friends popped into the Marina around 6:00, jumped in a boat for about 2 hours for a fun filled tour around the cove. We looked at houses, the Tribute Tower, enjoyed wine and cheese, watched the sun start setting and finished up in time to drive in to town for dinner. We were planning to visit Sneaky Pete's by boat for dinner, but the water was VERY choppy because of the high winds, so we weren't able to do it...this time! What a fun way to enjoy a Friday evening!!

We are excited to continue to build a relationship with the Big D Boat club and have some fun ideas to connect our peninsula with the fun they are having just across the water from us. In the meantime, we are glad to know they are there if any Tribute Homeowners want to get out on the beautiful Lake Lewisville from time to time!!

The Big D Boat Club has memberships available or rentals if you just want to use the boats occasionally.

Tribute Spring Festival....for KIDS of all ages!!

What a fun event we had Easter weekend at The Tribute!!

When I talk to the homeowners who came and look back over the pictures, I have one theme that keeps coming up over and over again. The kids had an amazing time!! We had face painting, bounce houses, hula hooping, the Easter Bunny, swimming, dancing, egg hunting, prizes, costumes, etc.!!!

But the Tribute event had a double purpose....to entertain the grown up kids, too.
We had great food, hula hoops, dancing and a BIG a grown up egg hunt with AWESOME PRIZE EGGS- Mavs playoff tickets & Old American Golf Club Passes!!

So, who do you think had more fun?? I think it's a toss up!!

My Tour of the Little Elm Schools

What a delightful and informative day I had today touring the Little Elm Schools & facilities!!
I am learning WHY our Tribute homeowners love the schools where they send their kids.

I met with Julie Zwahr who manages PR for Little Elm ISD. We toured and talked and I enjoyed all that I learned.

Ohe of my biggest "ah ha" moments from the day happened when she said what makes Little Elm unique is the overwhelming sense of community and RESPECT for diversity among the faculty and staff. It also holds true among the children and families. I am personally learning everyday more about the importance of community, stability and respectful connectedness. This is why The Tribute is a thriving and happy community. This is also why the schools are such a happy place. This is the missing link that I think most schools miss!! It is about great academics, athletics, special learning programs and life experiences!! Those are all important areas where Little Elm is earning high ratings! But, it's also about building a "tight knit" community that reflects the diverse world around us.

I can think of very few life lessons more important than human connectedness and respectful diversity. These will help our children navigate the world today- to live interdependently with others who are like-minded, but also learning to love and respect and work along side of those who come from a different world view.
Here are some other things that I saw and learned today..

Little Elm FEELS like a small town, but it is cutting edge and SMART in all of it's spending and programming.

Examples...
Below is a picture of the 5 yr. old Little Elm football/multi-use stadium.
This is one of the LEAST ornate, but SMARTEST stadiums around.

What impressed me was that they didn't spend many thousands of dollars
on stone archways and other non-functional features. It is a gorgeous stadium,
with elegant box seating that includes views of the surrounding areas. They are used for renting and entertaining. It also includes simulated grass turf, etc.
Basically, state-of-the-art everything minus unnecessary fluff.
(which is actually quite symbolic of the district as a whole)

I was also given a tour of the Lobo High School. It is also 5 years old and QUITE beautiful!!
My first thoughts were about how CLEAN, OPEN & FUNCTIONAL it was.
As I walked through the school I saw and learned that it has such an incredible variety of programs and opportunities for the students. I visited the Engineering class where students were learning high level things on computers, disassembling and reassembling a hard drive, and also fixing an overhead projector that needed a little help!
I visited the auditorium where they were having band practice on the stage. I passed the cafeteria (which was MUCH tamer that my high school cafeteria!), the Special Ed.classes and also learned that they just started a "Criminal Science" program...which is wildly popular. What a wonderful place!!

I thought this was cute. :)

So, I will keep posting more about the schools- the more that I learn, but I will say that this is a wonderful place for kids to be educated and more importantly- to become better, more well-rounded human beings!!

Tribute Snowman Making Contest on KXAS on 1/10/11

So, I was staying warm inside on Saturday of our first North Texas snow.
I had an idea to send out an email to see if I could rally a few homeowners to get outside
with their neighbors, build a snowman (or woman) and make a fun day out of our first snow.
I actually wondered if I would have any participation...and NOW I wonder why I wondered!!

I can always count on my Tribute Homeowners to "throw all in" to anything that involves

Competition
Family
Friends
Neighbors
The outdoors

I was so excited, by the end of the night the emails were pouring in with AWESOME snowpeople pictures!!
As usual, this awesome community fully embraced any opportunity for FUN!!

So, as I was having fun with this- I realized that the news channels were also have fun talking about the snow.
So, I sent in some pictures to our PR Agency~Buffalo Communications~ and they emailed the details about our snowman contest to some of the local news stations!!

By the end of the next day, we had 3 different news stories about our super fun snowman contest at The Tribute!! The homeowners were excited to see their beautiful creations on TV!!

Thank you Tribute homeowners for reminding me, yet again...what a wonderful place the Tribute is to live and play!!

I feel like I have been shot out of a cannon to start this excited 2011 at The Tribute!!
We have so many fun things we are working on for the development and for the realtor community!

Just to recap the last 45 days since I last posted...

December- Holiday Events

We had a special kids Holiday event at the home of Ruth and Rodger Knost.
The kids went for a "caroling sleigh ride" around the community.
They joined back at the Knost home for pizza, desserts, craft making and a gift exchange!!

Then, the following night we had an awesome progressive dinner hosted by Tribute Homeowners.
We had a champagne toast kick off... sushi, crab cakes, stuffed jalapenos...more food than should be legal!
We finished off together having desserts, more champagne toasts, cakeballs....and peppermint soap (a few of us, by accident)!!

For New Years, The Turner hosted a legendary party on Mitchell Way.

...and that's all I've got to say about that.

One of the greatest things about life on The Tribute Peninsula is that many of the homeowners have started to become like family to each other. They share babysitting, house sitting, dog sitting...they share meals and laughs, ideas and holidays. I have been watching something very cool unfolding here at The Tribute this year. When given the opportunity to share life together, many in The Tribute Community have thrown all in!!

This last weekend we had our Fall Festival. My heart smiled watching these families work together to make scarecrows to put in the front yard of their home...each with the personality of the family members! About 10 families gathered on the property together in the cool Fall weather. We had hay fights, kids running, parents stuffing, kids decorating...we had grandparents and grand kids, too and all topped off with a legendary Tribute sunset.

Then came the Chili Cook-off.
Chili on a Fall day with your family of neighbors!! How great is that??

We watched football, 10 pots of chili were delivered and a bunch of hungry bellies arrived!! The votes were tabulated and two winners were chosen!! The house was as full as every ones bellies!!!

I think we have a new Tribute Tradition. Thank you to everyone who made this a special night!!

Even as I sit down to type this blog, I come across the same problem that many before me have.
It's near impossible to put Matthews Southwest in a "box".

I know this...Jack Matthews is a visionary. His hands are often accused of turning things to gold. He's one of the most well respected developers in the business With his "outside-of-the-box" style of investing and developing, he hasn't followed the typical road to success, but his roads always seem to lead to good places.

A few thoughts for the day...

I have been serving the Tribute Community since January of this year. I started this blog with the hopes to "bottle up the greatness" of this very special place~where the world can get to know "It" a little bit better.

~"It" is the Tribute Community~

"It" is a living organism made up of some really amazing people who have atleast one really special thing in common.... The desire to live a beautiful life~in a beautiful place~near the "city life" (jobs, shopping, highways, etc.), but with the feeling of being far enough away to "escape" home every night...far enough away to sometimes "bump into" deer, fox, road runners, etc. as you explore the 300 acres of CORE property onsite.

In addition to the nature and beauty, I have learned that this place has a UNIQUE commitment to community. To "sharing life" together. To living and breathing in deeply each moment lived here.

I smile on the inside everytime I spend time with the Tribute Homeowners. I LOVE listening to the stories of the special ways everyone seems to enjoy the peninsula lifestyle.

Late night adventures down to Lake Lewisville beach- by golf cart.
Early morning walks with unique encounters with wildlife.
Spontaneous pool parties
Annual Halloween theme parties
Picnics by the lake
Nature walks
Etc., etc., etc.!!!

This is the perfect environment for a Community Event Planner!!

This community never lacks for fun. Just last weekend we had an 80's Party on the Tribute rooftop! I knew that an 80's themed event could be a risk. The risk: nobody comes in costume, nobody likes the music or dances to it, everyone leaves early to go home and watch Friday night TV. If I had any doubt about the homeowners showing up and embracing the event theme~I would have just had "drinks at sundown".

However, my instincts were right:

Uh huh, yep....totally RAD group of people (executives during the week, rockstars on the weekend)COMMITTED TO ENJOYING LIFE AT THE TRIBUTE!!

This place oozes cool...beauty....fun....a rare and beautiful lifestyle!! Everyday, I am enjoying learning more about the heart here and look forward to the growth and fun times ahead!
